Emanuel Feuermann (November 22, 1902 – May 25, 1942) was an internationally celebrated cellist in the first half of the 20th century. Feuermann was born in 1902 in Kolomyja, Galicia, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now Kolomyya, Ukraine) to Jewish parents. Both of his parents were amateur musicians. His father, who played the violin and cello, was his first teacher.

Don Quixote (Strauss). Don Quixote, Op. 35 is a tone poem by Richard Strauss for cello, viola, and orchestra. Subtitled Phantastische Variationen über ein Thema ritterlichen Charakters (Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character), the work is based on the novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes. Strauss composed this work in Munich in 1897. 1938 – Emanuel Feuermann (cello), Carlton Cooley (viola), Arturo Toscanini (conductor), NBC Symphony Orchestra (an unofficial release). 1941 – Gregor Piatigorsky (cello), Fritz Reiner (conductor), Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. 1943 – Joseph Schuster (cello), William Lincer, viola, Leonard Bernstein (conductor), New York Philharmonic (this was Bernstein's debut, and not released as an official recording until many years after his death).

As his four Death and Transfigurations, four Don Juans, and three Till Eulenspiegels testify, some works by Richard Strauss were staples of Toscanini's programs. Of the two, this one is clearly superior. It's not that Miller was a lesser cellist. As principal of the NBC Symphony under the irascible Italian, he dared not be any less than magnificent.

Emanuel Feuermann is originally from Kolomyia, Ukraine. He lived between 1902 and 1942. In the 20th century’s first half, Feuermann has become celebrated internationally. His first teacher was his father, a player of the cello and violin. Feuermann also received lessons from the principal cellist of the Vienna Philharmonic, Friedrich Buxbaum, when he was aged nine. Later he studied at the Music Academy in Vienna with Anton Walter. The eleven year old child prodigy made his concert debut in February 1914, playing with the Vienna Philharmonic. Wallenstein performed often with these orchestras as a soloist. He recorded Strauss’s Don Quixote in 1932 as solo cellist. While this list is by no means complete, the twelve cellists above have proven throughout history to be best-in-class cellists.
