Beethoven: The Late Quartets. This 2017 release by Austria's Quatuor Mosaïques is actually the second in a series; the first box, covering Beethoven's early quartets, appeared in 1994. Whether they thought about the difficult late quartets for 23 years or other projects simply intervened, this volume has been worth the wait. The middle quartets are apparently still to come. As before, the Quatuor Mosaïques uses gut strings and historically authentic bows, as well as a tuning slightly below the usual A 440.
Album · 2017 · 26 Songs. The Mosaïques have lived long with these pieces, and it shows in every bar-it all feels so right. Nothing is done for show; everything to dig deeper into music that seems to gaze down into the abyss or up to the heavens. Beethoven: The Late Quartets, Op. 127 - 135 Quatuor Mosaïques. Although Quatuor Mosaiques are among my very favourite quartets, I'm not wholly convinced by this set. I think their Mozart and Haydn recordings in particular are outstanding, with a wonderful balance between formality and emotion. Here, I'm not sure that balance is quite so well struck

The Quatuor Mosaïques is an Austrian string quartet, founded in 1987 by four members of the Concentus Musicus Wien, playing on historical musical instruments. They specialize in music of the 18th century and their Haydn recordings have received critical acclaim, including several Gramophone Awards. The three Austrian musicians and the French cellist Christophe Coin got to know each other in Vienna as members of Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s Concentus Musicus.
Ludwig van Beethoven's late string quartets are the following works: Opus 127: String Quartet No. 12 in E♭ major (1825). Opus 130: String Quartet No. 13 in B♭ major (1825).
