As mentioned on the New Wave Music page, the term is hard to pin down and covers a wide range of artists from the period spanning the late 70s and on into the 80s. It came to mean music that was slightly out of the mainstream, a post-punk, pre-alternative music that was edgier and with more attitude. Below are some of the most popular New Wave hits of the 80s listed alphabetically by artist. This list of 80s new wave songs includes some songs from the late 70s (they have to be really special to be included) and is by no means all inclusive

New Wave music meant a lot of things in the late 1970s. It encompassed pretty much everything that followed the punk movement that still served as an alternative to mainstream pop and rock. There was power-pop, neo-psychedelia, acid-punk, art rock and lots and lots of keyboards. In many ways, New Wave gave hope to independent bands playing in burgeoning local scenes. The college-radio boom of the ‘80s and indie rock of the 21st Century both owe a lot to the New Wave bands on this list. Here are the 50 best New Wave albums

Grab your Walkman, turn up the treble and get ready to celebrate pop’s golden era with these best ’80s songs. Harken back to the days where neon purple and forest green made for a fashion-forward color pallette, Betamax technology signaled the way of the future and Aliens was the cinematic voice of a generation rather than a meager disappointment at the box office

Note- These songs are not necessarily the artists all-time greatest, but their best of the 'New Wave' sound

Soul and funk were reaching new levels of artistry. Punk, the first serious backlash against the rock mainstream, came into its own. Records from Jamaica were making their way to the UK and, eventually, the . changing sounds and urging a new kind of political consciousness. But the version recorded for his massive 1976 crossover album Africa Brasil exudes joy, sparks flying from every exuberant note. The record would end up getting Rod Stewart-whose Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? bore a strong resemblance-sued. The story goes that, sometime in the mid-’80s, David Byrne found Estudando o Samba ( Studying Samba ) in a record store in Rio De Janeiro. He assumed it would be like the rest of the samba records he was collecting, but its cover gave a hint of something subversive: the image of a barbed wire fence scrawled across a white surface.

This was never issued as a silver factory pressed CD. It only came as a Gold CDR with a professionally pressed front insert like one would find in the first wave of CD singles from the UK.
