Possibly the greatest quartet Motown ever produced didn’t perform together until long after their careers had taken downturns, but it’s nice to see anyway Martha Reeves singing "Dancin' In the Street" on stage alongside Mary Wells, David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks. Recorded live in 1987 at Los Angeles Great Western Forum, this is a solid, lively version of a classic song, diminished not much at all by the years of the performers
Martha is Motown's other Diva Supreme. It still bothers me that she does not receive the recognition she so truly deserves. At a show in Britain-were only Reeves was asked to sing with Dusty Springfield-Berry told her that The Supremes were now "His Girls" now and that she was on the "Bottom Level" now. How devastating!! Martha and the Vandellas still made hit records with little or no promotion and remained popular even without Berry's guidance. At the end of the book she talks about Mary Wells. Mary apparently would ask Martha to "get her some drugs" WHOA! This went on in front of Mary's baby girl Sugar. I really enjoyed her small tidbits about other Motown artist such as Marvin Gaye, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks and Diana Ross (who I think she secretly hates lol). I do think this book says a whole lot about Barry Gordy and the way he treated with his artist. Overall, any Motown fan most read this book!
Mary Wells, although looking beautiful, struggles through a lot of her set, but she is as charming as many remember her. Her dialoge between songs is touching. Eddie Kendrick is slim and slick and dances almost like Fred Astair, light and cool! David Ruffin is in fine voice although obviously intoxicated. And Martha Reeves is a treat. She attacks her set almost as James Brown or Tina Turner would. This lady performs, dances, sings and directs the band all at the same time.

Martha Reeves - Listen toMartha Reeves on Deezer. By the early 1970s, ill-health, drug problems and internal disputes caused the collapse of Martha & the Vandellas with Reeves launching her solo career and a self-titled album in 1974. However, she never matched her success with the Vandellas and effectively stopped recording in the 1980s, though there was a 2004 comeback with the album, Home To You and she has made occasional live appearances since.
