On paper, I Love My Friends sounds like a spectacularly hard sell: a nakedly confessional post-Britpop singer-songwriter album from a former teen pop star undergoing therapy and recently dropped by his record label. It's testament to the apparently fathomless abilities of Robbie Williams' current co-writer that he turned unpromising material into a magnificent album. Witty and affecting rather than self-indulgent, loaded with elegant melodies 1998's I Love My Friends is - like virtually everything Duffy has released - an overlooked marvel, dated only by the Blur-ish oompah rock.

Stephen Duffy has a history of writing pristine, hooky pop music-in the eighties as "Tin Tin" and "The Lilac Time" and more recently under his own name (as well as co-writing songs for Barenaked Ladies). I Love My Friends" continues where his previous effort, "Duffy", left off. On "Duffy", Duffy moved away from the shimmering production and bucolic instrumentation of his Lilac Time period and added some distinctly rock elements (helped by producer Mitch Easter). On "I Love My Friends", he bridges the gap between the two. This album.

Stephen 'Tin Tin' Duffy - Wednesday Jones (Dixie). From Stephen Duffy's 'They Called Him Tin Tin' album. Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy - Icing On the Cake. The immaculately flawless "Icing On The Cake" from the very talented Mr Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy. Taken from Stephen's debut album release "The Ups And. Stephen Duffy - Kiss Me (1985 Version)

This is a well-crafted album, full of great sounds, and enough surprises and variety in the pacing to keep the listener hooked. He also uses instruments very well throughout. Caroline Dale deserves special note for her wonderful cello playing on the beautiful "Smitten. The production is crisp and not overdone. Duffy also arranges vocals on this album to both create atmosphere and move the song along. Listen to the vocals of "Ghetto Child," and it is clear that the song is so effective because of the layered vocals
