Electric organs, found in several species of fish, produce weak electric discharges by the use of a modified muscle or nerve (electric organ discharge (EOD)). These feeble discharges (<1 V) are sensed by specialized electroreceptors (tuberous electroreceptors) distributed over the skin of the fish. Together, the electric organ and electroreceptors comprise the active electrosensory system; these fish also have a small number of ampullary-type electroreceptors sensitive to the low-frequency electric fields produced by other organisms (not discussed in this article).

Redirected from Electric organ discharge). In biology, the electric organ is an organ common to all electric fish used for the purposes of creating an electric field. The electric organ is derived from modified nerve or muscle tissue. The electric discharge from this organ is used for navigation, communication, defense and also sometimes for the incapacitation of prey.

Electric Organ Discharge (EOD) in Electric Rays (Torpedo s. Introduction. Developmental stages of the Electric Organ. Relationship of Electric organ and Body Development. Ultrastructure and developmental stages of the electric organ The adult electric organ consists of a group of vertical cellular columns, derived from sheets of lateral mesoderm present in each of the hyoid and the first four branchial arches. Their morphogenesis into electric plates can be observed step by step. The central element of each electric organ is the electrocyte, also known as electroplate. It is a highly multinucleated cell, that does not reveal myofibrils. Myogenic phase: The electric organ of Torpedo marmorata is a mesodermally derived structure originating within the first four.

Electric rays have evolved the electric organ, which is similar to the mammalian neuromuscular junction (NMJ). Here, we took a combined cDNA sequencing and proteomic approach to define the molecular constituents of the T. californica electric organ. For soluble proteins, 2-DE was used and 224 protein spots were mapped. Plasma membrane fractions were analyzed using the shotgun approach (LC-MS/MS). A Torpedo cDNA library was constructed and 607 cDNA clones were sequenced
