More than two hours of vocal-free burbles, drones, gulps and splashes, the albums run the gauntlet from achingly wistful innocence ("Biking to School," "First Kiss") to menacing ambience ("The Upside Down," "No Weapons") to minimalist propulsion ("Gearing Up," "Breaking and Entering") to the absolute panic of 65-second heart-attack. The sessions for Iggy Pop's best album in many years were helmed by Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, who created the perfect dark, rangy sound for him to flex in front of. Throughout Post Pop Depression, he's in his finest low-rent punk-poet elder statesman mode.
These are the best of a challenging, rewarding, overall epic year. Kamaiyah’s style descends from fellow West Coast rappers like Suga Free, but it’s also very much her own, blending equal loves of Cali hip-hop and ’90s vocal groups like TLC. Bay Area producers such as P-Lo, 1-. and Trackademicks blend new jack swing and radio R&B samples for this young, agile rapper. The YG-featuring Fuck It Up and life-affirming hit single How Does It Feel? leap out of the speakers and onto many DJ sets, but it’s the overall triumphant vibe of A Good Night in the Ghetto that merits repeat listens. Listen: Kamaiyah: How Does It Feel.
The Night is the fifth and final studio album by the alternative rock band Morphine. Jerome Deupree, the band's original drummer who had earlier quit due to health problems, rejoined alongside Billy Conway, thus making The Night Morphine's only album as a quartet rather than a trio
Put simply, Powerage is arguably the best rock album of the 70s. But, sandwiched between two of the band’s other peaks, Let There Be Rock and Highway To Hell, AC/DC’s fourth international release, it didn’t immediately stake a claim as their best album. You Shook Me All Night Long perfectly illustrates Lange’s ability to bring an entirely acceptable pop sensibility to a hard rock band as he helps the band deliver a singalong, ‘arms around your best mate’s shoulder’ winner of a tune. It has so many classic songs: Hells Bells, Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution, Shoot To Thrill, What Do You Do For Money Honey (a song that dates from sessions for 1978’s Powerage album), and of course that genius title track, built on a juddering riff that sounds like the blues would if it was deconstructed by Satan and.
Nevertheless, we feel confident the following records are the best reflection of what 2018 had to offer: carefully-crafted works of art that, failing all else, reliably produced a sense of wonder. Tierra Whack’s Whack World is an album of minute-long snippets that is effectively a pool of fresh water in the desert; the fact that it sounds as if it continues, when there’s really nothing there, stings. But what’s there is a captivating range of sounds that showcases her ability to rap ( Bugs Life ), sing ( Black Nails ), and entertain ( Hookers ). Die Lit begins with what sounds like a sonic grin – Long Time is full on the preparation for a night of debauchery. Throughout Playboi Carti’s long-awaited studio debut, his unique rap style serves up some of the most memorable moments of the year: from the immensely goofy Poke It Out to the nonsensical refrain of Lean 4 Real.

Album: Friday Night Lights. Months after blowing up with his 2009 mixtape, The Warm Up, J. Cole signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. Throughout 2010, his peers (Drake, Wale, . B, Kid Cudi) released their debut albums, while Cole’s was hung up by numerous delays. Since the label didn’t think it would sell, Cole decided to re-package the songs into a free mixtape. It became Friday Night Lights. The project was J. Cole at his hungriest, intent on proving he was worthy of his newfound buzz. By 2002, Eminem had usurped Jay-Z as the best rapper alive following the enormous success of his first two albums. His popularity brought with it a vicious assault against him - some from the highest levels of American government. The attempts to censor Eminem were based on the fear of his influence on American children and came mostly from white, suburban people who had not paid attention to rap before.
