Tegan and Sara are a Canadian indie band formed in 1995 in Calgary. Composed of identical twin sisters Tegan Rain Quin and Sara Keirsten Quin (born September 19, 1980). Both Tegan and Sara play guitar and keyboard and write their songs. Tegan and Sara Quin began playing guitar and writing songs at age 15. They initially played as Plunk without a drummer or bass player

For their seventh album, Tegan and Sara put down their guitars and made a consummate shift to stratospheric synth-pop. It unites the sisters' once-disparate songwriting sensibilities to massive effect: Closer and Drove Me Wild are dizzyingly euphoric, yet the populist shift doesn’t sacrifice their emotional complexity. I Was a Fool is a gorgeous piano ballad, Shock to Your System is a dystopian girl-group number, and on I’m Not Your Hero, Sara sings candidly about the difficulty of being a queer role model

Instead, Tegan and Sara sound like La Roux crossed with Toni Basil Heartthrob’s connection to music of the early ’80s isn’t trite – it’s a treat. The nasal/soft vocal switch off almost seems like the album itself is engaged in a private debate over whether “Time After Time” or “All Through The Night” is the superior Cyndi Lauper ballad – both influence Heartthrob immensely. But once you start there, a spectrum of coiffed divas come to mind. Ann Wilson’s undying vocal in “What About Love”.
