La Luz’s sound is a lot like a mai tai: Both sweet and strong, it goes down easy before knocking you flat. 80. An elevated level of bravado is present from the outset on La Luz’s third album, Floating Features.

Los Angeles has often been described as a dream factory -both a mecca where dreamers converge to pursue long-held aspirations, and a topography of hallucinogenic contradictions: enchanting tangerine sunsets diffused by smog, crystal-clutching spiritualists mingling with deep-pocketed narcissists, rows of scenic palms competing with garish billboards for commuters’ attention. For this, their most ambitious release yet, La Luz consulted landscapes both physical and psychological. References to dreams abound on Floating Features. Loose Teeth catalyzes nightmare fuel into a propulsive, enting collision of honeyed harmonies and Takeshi Terauchi-esque jetstreams of distorted surf guitar.

Floating Features, 2018. La Luz. Floating Features, 02:13.

La Luz know this, so their third album, Floating Features, looks both ahead and backwards. On Floating Features, the band take classic psych attributes-dreamy melodies, swirling vocals, surf riffs-and repurpose them to create a collection that is classic, but also current, placing their distinctly modern perspective squarely in the limelight. Floating Features finds La Shana Cleveland, drummer Marian Li Pino, keyboardist Alice Sandahl, and bassist Lena Simon-relocating from Seattle to Los Angeles. Dreams are another essential element of Floating Features, which achieves a far more lush, glowing production than La Luz’s previous records, 2015’s Weirdo Shine and 2013’s It’s Alive. Mean Dream is breezy indie rock with vivid and bizarre imagery, while Lonely Dozer is a spaghetti western-stomper featuring a wayward protagonist who is alone inside at night.

Every note of Farfisa is vital to the soul of the tracks on this record, such as on the titular intro track "Floating Features" and the organ lead on "Greed Machine. La Luz is amazingly easy for almost anyone to listen to, regardless of your musical taste. But people who really love atmosphere and nuance in their rock music will be rewarded especially well with the richly layered and carefully arranged songs on this album that evoke contentment, sadness, fear, and loss (often simultaneously).
