Tropicália ou Panis et Circencis (misspelled Latin for Bread and circuses) is a 1968 collaboration album by artists including Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Zé, Os Mutantes and Gal Costa. Considered an important record in the history of Brazilian music, it features arrangements by Rogerio Duprat and lyrical contributions from Torquato Neto.
This is the compilation that helped to define the sound of Tropicalia, whose artists made huge and influential strides in creating exotic pop that was as influenced by psychedelia as it was by samba, bossa nova, and more traditional South American genres. Tropicália not only includes tracks from the label's most important acts (Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa), but presents a large number of collaborations between these artists, many of which are simply amazing.
I was looking for the Tropicalia album for a long time, then finally found this one in the past year on a local store.
Tropicália Ou Panis Et Circencis (LP, Album, Mono). Tropicália Ou Panis Et Circensis (LP, Album, Mono, RP).
Originally released in 1969, this album is one of the most significant in Brazilian musical history, spearheading the musical Tropicalia revolution lead by Brazilian legends Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, not to mention Gal Costa and mutant rockers Os Mutantes. Not only were the artists experimenting with the music, they were also making a very strong political statement that spoke out very harshly against the military regime in Brazil at the time. This album helped land Veloso and Gil a brief stint in jail and eventually in political exile in the UK. Includes bonus CD of the album
