The song was later released as a single by Pete Shelley when he started a solo career, and as the title track on his debut album. On the album’s cover, as well as in the music video, Shelley wears a Green Carnation which was a gay pride symbol from the Victorian period

But more importantly, this is the only attempt by Shelley to retain the compressed, tight, hard production and vocals of his band work, despite the new genre and the predominance of a 12-string acoustic in favor of the old buzzsaw.

It was the first single from his album of the same title, released in 1981. Shelley wrote the song in 1974, before forming the Buzzcocks in 1976. The track adopted a more synth pop sound in contrast to the Buzzcocks' harsh guitar riffs.
