The Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra in E-flat major, K. 364 (320d), was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. At the time of its composition in 1779, Mozart was on a tour of Europe that included Mannheim and Paris. Mozart had been experimenting with the sinfonia concertante genre and this work can be considered his most successful realization in this cross-over genre between symphony and concerto.
The Mozart Sinfonia Concertante for violin, viola, and orchestra in E flat, K. 364, is a challenging work for interpreters, with one of those spacious Mozart first movements that lack real melodies, instead building up large structures through an evolving balance among a group of simple musical elements. A common approach is to try to give it a kind of tension, beginning with the long held note by the solo violin at the beginning of the first solo section, coming in several bars before the start of the actual solos; the rest of the long movement then releases the tension. In the Duo for Violin and Viola in F major, K. 423, that rounds out the disc, there is no such problem with the orchestra to contend with.

Mozart's "Sinfonia Concertante" was inspired by his visit to Paris where this unique form was very popular. Composed in 1779 as a large scale double concerto, this absolute masterpiece features a solo violin and viola which are played by David Oistrakh and his son Igor on this 1963 original DECCA recording. The Moscow Philharmonic, conducted by Kyril Kondrashin, provides an accompaniment of unfailing sensitivity and depth, matching a father/son duet of breathtaking poetry. Disc: 1. 1. But as soon as this newly-remastered 2CD Legendary Performances version was released, which included the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante in E flat K 364, and the Mozart Duo K 423, I had to get my hands on it. The Mozart pieces are played in an extraordinarily sensitive manner, and the tremendous emotional understanding between father (David Oistrakh) on viola and son (Igor Oistrakh) on violin lead to sublime music-making. Critic James Manheim called their relationship "symbiotic," which is a very fair (and intellectual) assessment, but I would simply characterize it as "loving.
