That's the Way Love Is is the tenth studio album by soul musician Marvin Gaye, released on January 8, 1970, on the Tamla (Motown) label. Built on the success of the title track ( US Pop, US R&B in late 1969) originally taken from . and much like Gaye's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" after its success, was released with intent to sell albums based on the success of one particular single (a Motown trademark).
That's the Way Love Is" is a 1967 Tamla (Motown) single recorded by The Isley Brothers and produced by Norman Whitfield, later covered in a 1969 hit version by Marvin Gaye. The single was his third consecutive million-selling solo hit after "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby" written by Whitfield and Barrett Strong. Whitfield took the up-tempo Isley Brothers record, and turned it into a slowed-down psychedelic soul opus

Marvin Gaye – "When I Had Your Love". Released January 1966. He was Motown's greatest, biggest male solo star, whose influence inspired countless soul singers – and even Robin Thicke, apparently – or should I say allegedly? Unlike many of Motown's acts, Gaye was not a Detroit native, but he made the city his home after establishing himself as a superstar. He was tragically shot and killed by his father on April 1, 1984, following an argument. The Isley Brothers are soul legends and one of the genre's best-selling and longest-performing groups. The Cincinnati natives first cracked the big time with "Shout" in 1959. Their biggest smashes happened both before and after their time with Motown - "Twist & Shout," "It's Your Thing," "That Lady," "Between the Sheets" and countless others.
