G. Ph. Telemann: Concerti da Camera.

Georg Philipp Telemann (24 March 1681 – 25 June 1767) (German pronunciation: ) was a German Baroque composer and t. Almost completely self-taught in music, he became a composer against his family's wishes. After studying in Magdeburg, Zellerfeld, and Hildesheim, Telemann entered the University of Leipzig to study law, but eventually settled on a career in music

Telemann's 12 Fantasias for solo flute were composed around 1730. They are not extreme works in the vein of Bach's solo works for violin or cello, and they may have been intended as pieces designed to teach the concept of fantasy. You could sample almost anywhere, but the brief largo gesture at the beginning of the B minor fantasia, played on the granadilla wood flute, would be one place. Whatever their original intent, these are virtuoso works in Solomon's hands. Channel Classics' church acoustic is too big for what was certainly very intimate music, but it does not distort his achievement.

The music of Georg Philipp Telemann both deserves and repays close attention and careful preparation. Dabringhaus und Grimm has done Telemann proud by presenting Musica Alpa Ripa's performances in exemplary fashion, with wonderfully clear sound and commendably lucid booklet notes (from Ute Poetzch). Poetzch's notes trace Telemann's involvement with chamber music. The five examples on the present disc make a nicely contrastive programme. Hanover-based ensemble Musica Alta Ripa utilise a mixed instrumental obbligato in a combination of the theorbo, guitar, double bass and harpsichord in a form which is closely related to Vivaldi's chamber concertos for tonally contrasting instruments. This rich and colourful scoring is heard to significant effect in the Sonata in F minor TWV 44:32 which reveals itself to be a particularly sophisticated work with a full-sound.

This release contains the complete chamber music of the French master, with the complete Les Nations (a musical depiction of nationalities), Concerts Royaux, Les Gouts réunis, L’Apothéose de Corelli and de Lully and other pieces. Instrumentation is for traversos, violins, oboes, bassoon, viola da gamba, cello, archlute and harpsichord. Expertly played on original instruments by the ensemble Musica ad Rhenum conducted by specialist Jed Wentz.
