Guitarist, songwriter, and producer Blake Mills was celebrated as an outsider talent for his debut effort Break Mirrors in 2010. The fact was he'd already established himself among the fraternity of musicians. He initially recorded that set with the conscious goal of securing more session work. Mills realized it, and also did live work with everyone from Fiona Apple and Neil Diamond to Band of Horses and Norah Jones, and became a producer as well. Heigh Ho furthers the reach of Break Mirrors
Mills released his second full length album, Heigh Ho, on September 16, 2014. This self-produced album combines a range of genres. Along with friends and inspirations including Fiona Apple, Jim Keltner, Don Was, Benmont Tench, Jon Brion, and Mike Elizondo, Mills recorded Heigh Ho at the legendary Ocean Way Recording studios in a room built for Frank Sinatra. He also produced the sophomore release from Alabama Shakes. Recording took place at Sound Emporium in Nashville, a studio originally built for Sun Records house producer Cowboy Jack Clement
Album · 2014 · 12 Songs. Heigh Ho is only his second release, but it’s the work of a seasoned artist. At just 28, Blake Mills is already an in-demand session guitarist. He’s worked with Norah Jones, Band of Horses, Lucinda Williams, and other big names. On Heigh Ho, he’s joined by guests Benmont Tench, Don Was, Fiona Apple, and Jim Keltner. That’s a lot of name-dropping. But Mills more than lives up to it. The guitar playing is phenomenal. It’s textured, subtle, and brilliant without being showy. But he’s also a gifted songwriter and arranger, and his singing is emotional and distinct.

Heigh Ho,' Mills' second full-length album, is 12 tracks of mercurially complex musical arrangements that serve to support the singer-songwriter's evocative vocals. Mills might be an artist who hasn't flown across your radar, but you're likely familiar with his work; in 2010 he discreetly released his debut LP, 'Break Mirrors,' and before that, he founded the indie rock outfit Simon Dawes (which would later evolve into Dawes) with Taylor Goldsmith. Mills wastes no time with fluff tracks as the album opens with 'If I'm Unworthy,' a song that constantly feels like it should head in one direction, but the conductor takes it in another - and for good reason. Followed by 'Cry to Laugh,' the dynamic musicianship of Mills is on display as the seemingly chill tune builds to a raucous climax about two minutes in.
Eric Clapton recently called him the last guitarist I heard that I thought was phenomenal. The producer Don Was says he is one of those rare musicians who come along once in a generation. Blake Mills isn’t a household name, but he has quickly earned a dazzling reputation among his fellow musicians. At 27, he is creating a style all his own, a sound that has little in common with the high-speed, acrobatic flash usually associated with guitar heroes. Growing up in Malibu, Calif.
