Sea Shanties Volume II. Various artists. Sailing and Whaling Songs by Paul Clayton. Clayton's wistful story-telling style makes for a different yet somehow appropriate approach to this music. If you're in the mood for a good voice nicely accompanied on guitar, think about this one for something that might get you listening to the lyrics in a new way. American Sea Shanties and Songs - various artists. William Pint and Felicia Dale. A folk album with a tall ship theme. Includes a number of traditional songs: the French Canadian rowing/paddling song "C'est L'Aviron", the euphemistic "Marco Polo" (Hob Y Derri Dando), and the sea song "Bay of Biscay". There are two shanties, the first being a version of "Essiquibo River" dolled up with lots of instrumentation. What makes this album worth getting for me is the great version of "Juliana", (called "London Julies" on this CD).

On the topic (no pun intended) of sea songs and shanties, there are at least a dozen releases in the catalog that were appropriate to select from, including albums by artists such as . Lloyd and Stan Kelly. There are perceivably listeners who would be interested in this genre without wanting to invest in entire albums by particular artists, and from this point-of-view this album will be considered a winner. A point could be made that this is the type of music that is more satisfying, and more interesting to listen to, when it is presented in compilation form.

Sea Shanties were basically the work songs that were used during the time of the great sailing ships. The Golden Age of the shanties was in the mid-nineteenth century. Their rhythms coordinated the efforts of many sailors hauling on lines. They are rarely used as work songs today. Now they are mainly used by singing groups. In Lord Nelson's Navy shanties were banned, and the work was accompanied instead by calling out numbers or the rhythmic playing of a fiddle or fife. The word shanty or chanty may be derived from the French word chanter which means to sing

Sailors' Songs & Sea Shanties. Blow the Man Down: A Collection Of Sea Songs & Shanties. Irish Pirate Ballads and Other Songs of the Sea. Dan Milner. As a double CD, you will find some songs you will adore and others you can skip over. Overall, it's a wonderful introduction to a genre that deserves a fresh look.
