I heard the Spohr Concerto performed in concert by the Milwaukee Symphony with the Fine Arts Quartet as soloists. Ingenious piece but not compelling listening, in my opinion. Founded in 1998, the Bennewitz Quartet soon ranked among the most distinguished Czech chamber ensembles. The major influences on the members’ artistic development were that of Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet), with whom they worked in Madrid from 2002 to 2004, and subsequently Walter Levin (LaSalle Quartet) at the Musik-Akademie in Basel. In 2001, the quartet won 1st prize in the Bohuslav Martinů Foundation Competition in Prague, in 2004 they received two prizes (the Jahresstipendium der ung and Bärenreiter Urtext Preis) at the prestigious ARD competition in Munich .
