Khyal or Khayal is the modern genre of Hindustani classical music from the Indian subcontinent. Its name comes from an Arabic word meaning "imagination". It is thought to have developed out of Dhrupad introducing frequent taans and alankars in it. It appeared more recently than Dhrupad, is a more free and flexible form, and it provides greater scope for improvisation. Like all Indian classical music, khyal is modal, with a single melodic line and no harmonic parts. The modes are called raga.

Thumrī is a common genre of semi-classical Indian music. The term "thumri" is derived from the Hindi verb thumakna, which means "to walk with dancing steps so as to make the ankle-bells tinkle. The form is, thus, connected with dance, dramatic gestures, mild eroticism, evocative love poetry and folk songs of Uttar Pradesh, though there are regional variations.

North India: Vocal Music. The prime gripe with this album is that the ragas used in it are labeled as "Alap and Dhrupad" or "Alap and Khyal," which is a heavy incident of misnomer, as an alap is actually the introduction portion of a North Indian piece, and dhrupad and khyal are simply the styles of classical vocal music employed by the artists
