Maurizio Pollini, Piano. Sunday, April 29, 2018 2 PM Stern Auditorium, Perelman Stage. Maurizio Pollini by Jennifer Taylor. Expectations soar and the excitement reaches fever pitch every time Maurizio Pollini steps on to the Carnegie Hall stage. It’s not surprising, since he has been a pianist par excellence for decades. His recordings of the complete works for piano by Schoenberg, and of works by Berg, Webern, Manzoni, Nono, Boulez, and Stockhausen are a testament to his great passion for music of the 20th century. His album of Chopin nocturnes earned him many honors, including the ECHO Klassik Award, Choc de la Musique, Victoires de la Musique, Diapason d’Or de l’Année, Grammy Award, and Disco d’Oro. In recognition of his 75th birthday, Deutsche Grammophon released Pollini’s complete recordings, comprising more than 55 CDs and three bonus DVDs.

Here are his complete recordings of 20th-century music, brought together on a specially-priced 6-CD set for the first time. In 1948 Maurizio Pollini received his first piano lessons from Carlo Lonati. From 1955 until 1959 he continued his studies with Carlo Vidusso and in 1958 he began to study composition with Bruno Bettinelli. In 1960 he was awarded first prize at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw and appeared at La Scala playing Chopin’s First Piano Concerto under Celibidache. Since then Pollini has become one of the most admired and respected pianists of our time and has appeared all over the world with leading orchestras and conductors. Debut in the USA. Increasingly performs music of the 20th century. First appearance with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

That’s the effect Maurizio Pollini’s playing has on me. The man has been sucking the life out of Beethoven piano sonatas for decades, but surely never so annoyingly as he did last week, when he opened the spring season of the Southbank Centre’s International Piano Series. The applause was thunderous, it’s true, but it was a particular type of applause that you hear more often at the Southbank than anywhere else: a veteran soloist being cheered to the rafters, not for the music (I hope - unless the audience were cloth-eared morons) but for being himself. And in the past there were master pianists, such as Curzon and Kempff, whose shaky live performances conveyed more of the essence of the music than their studio recordings: they weren’t being applauded simply for being themselves. In any case, Pollini’s technique is shot to pieces in a different way - far fewer wrong notes, but the legendary precision is gone.
