Durand Jones hadn't the intent to front a retro-soul band when he moved from the Deep South to the Midwest. Back home in Louisiana, he had wowed fellow parishioners with his voice, but he had become an accomplished saxophonist and enrolled in a postgraduate music program at Indiana University. While playing with a shorthanded . Soul Revue, he sang again at the band director's urging and met the musicians with whom he formed Durand Jones & the Indications.
In the fall of 2012, Durand Jones left his small-town in Louisiana for the foothills of Indiana. Alto saxophone in tow he enrolled in the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Being a singer was never part of the plan, Jones admits. But soon enough he found his way in front of a rowdy rock-n-roll band belting out a rambunctious rendition of Dock Of The Bay, to a basement full of drunken undergrads. Durand Jones & The Indications' self-titled debut album was the result. With comparisons from Charles Bradley and Lee Fields to Al Green, the only thing that separates this band from those greats is their youth. Having now taken their raucous live show all across the US, the band have galvanized a following that are ready to take them to the next level.

When Durand Jones & the Indications released their self-titled debut album in 2016, it didn’t take long for them to notice that fans were gravitating to a particular track: Is It Any Wonder, a lolling, pretty soul ballad, with sharp rim-shots puncturing long lines of prepubescent falsetto from drummer Aaron Frazer.
If Durand Jones & the Indications was the party, their second album and first since signing to Dead Oceans, American Love Call, is the slow dance. Jones and crew trade their infectious bounce for punch-drunk sway, leaning fully into orchestral soul. Gone are Wilson Pickett’s brash horns, replaced instead with the lush strings of, say, Ben E. King, and backing vocals that conjure the dreamy-eyed woe of the Temptations and the Miracles. American Love Call doesn’t celebrate love so much as interrogate it. Jones bemoans getting the runaround on Circles.
Durand Jones & The Indications have announced a new album and tour, both coming in early 2019. American Love Call is the group’s second LP following their self-titled debut, released in 2016 just after the 20-somethings graduated from Indiana University. With the album announcement comes its lead single and accompanying music video, Don’t You Know. From the start, the band’s laid-back, early-’70s groove, when paired with the two impossibly smooth vocalists at the forefront of the project, allowed Jones & The Indications to reach an almost nostalgic, ridiculous level of cool
