Steady On (Shawn Colvin album). Steady On is the 1989 debut album by American singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin. In addition to launching Colvin's career the album won the award for Best Contemporary Folk Album at the 33rd Grammy Awards in February 1991. Notable guest appearances include Suzanne Vega and Bruce Hornsby.

It's an album of lullabies inspired by a book that Colvin was given when she was 8 years-old called "Lullabies and Night Songs" which features arrangements by famed 20th century composer Alec Wilder and illustrations by Maurice Sendak ("Where The Wild Things Are").

Shawn Colvin is both a peerless veteran songwriter and an acoustic road warrior whose resilient voice has miraculously survived the rigors of endless nightclubs and touring to twirl in chilling delight. This 15-track live album, her second, recorded during a three night solo acoustic stand at Yoshi’s jazz club in San Francisco, includes just about every career highlight you could ask for. Her most familiar material, Sunny Came Home, Polaroids, Diamonds In the Rough, sit next to her excellent interpretations of the Talking Heads’ This Must Be the Place and Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy, all.

Sonically, Steady On is a triumph, with its emotional intimacy captured with smooth precision. Vocally, Colvin's tender, sometimes whisper-like performances are astonishing and haunting, provocative and seductive all at once. Then there are the songs that flow so effortlessly into one another that to remove even one would seemingly upset the entire balance of the cosmos as we know it. The sly Colvin adeptly plays with words, beats, phrasing, and rhymes, focusing not just on the meaning, but also the feel and rhythm of the lyrics to great effect.
