This is the talk page for discussing improvements to the Rock Bottom (album) article. This is not a forum for general discussion of the article's subject. Put new text under old text. I didn't realize how much "I'm a Believer"-even as a stand-alone, non-album cover song-was tied into the Rock Bottom promo cycle and born out of the label's desire for a marketable single from Wyatt at that time. Anyway, it makes more sense to write about it here than to flesh out a history of Wyatt's "I'm a Believer" shoehorned between the Monkees and Smash Mouth.
Rock Bottom is the second solo album by former Soft Machine drummer Robert Wyatt. Although Rock Bottom is technically Wyatt's second solo LP, he has stated in several interviews that he considers its predecessor The End of an Ear as juvenilia and not part of the recognised "canon" of Wyatt solo records. The album was produced by Pink Floyd's drummer Nick Mason. The artwork for the cover of the album, both the delicate drawing for the 1974 original and the colourful painting for the 1998 re-issue, were by Alfreda Benge. Enlisting friends and luminaries such as Fred Frith, Ivor Cutler and Pink Floyd's Nick Mason (who produced the album), Wyatt recorded most of the album shortly after his release from hospital. In July 1974, the album was released to great critical acclaim.

Rock Bottom is the music Wyatt made to help with that healing process. The album was primarily written while he was healing in the hospital. Enlisting friends like guitarist Fred Frith, poet Ivor Cutler, Mike Oldfield and Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason (as producer), Wyatt recorded Rock Bottom shortly after his release from the hospital. The album is deeply inspired by his relationship with Alfreda Benge, who Wyatt married on the day Rock Bottom was released. She painted both covers for the album (for the original and the 1998 reissue) and appears at the end of Alife
