If you're familiar with Meg Baird or Mary Lattimore, as any self-respecting listener of American folk and psych-adjacent music over the past decade surely is, you can guess how monumental their first collaborative album will be. Called Ghost Forests, it's out this Friday on the timeless Three Lobed Recordings. Baird's guitar and voice and Lattimore's harp are just meant to go together
Ghost Forests,' the long-mooted collaboration between folk singer-songwriter Baird and harpist Lattimore, is out on November 9. Listen to "Painter of Tygers," the first single from the record. It's difficult to imagine it coming from anywhere other than LA. Last year Meg Baird, the folksinger, took her friend Mary Lattimore, the harpist, to an exhibition called Between Two Worlds at the San Francisco MoMA. Lattimore had only been living in Los Angeles for a few months, and she was in the middle of a two-month residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts, a few miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge. Baird, conversely, had been in San Francisco for five years already. She was settled in the state.

and Lattimore’s work. Baird told Uncut that a major inspiration for Ghost Forests was the location of the Headlands Center For The Arts near Sausalito, where her friend worked on her recent solo album Hundreds Of Days during a term there as artist in residence. I came up to visit sometimes from the city, and her giant, dreamy redwood studio is where the first sketches for the collaboration were made, she said, adding that the way we were meeting up again in this heartwarming but heartbreaking, terrifying but gentle, beautiful coastal place made a deep impact
Ghost Forests musical conversations between Meg Baird (Espers) and Mary Lattmore are intimate, fluid, effortless and spontaneous. They’re filled with the euphoria of creation and, at times, they arti culate hard truths and tangled emotions with an ease only trusted friends can manage. The songs alternate between extended ethereal instrumental excursions, gauzy and dreamy pop, blown-out Bull of the Woods heavy haze, and modern re-imaginations of epic traditional balladry all while touching on the strange and otherworldly places between these stations.
