Rajendra Prasanna was born in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. He learnt music from his father Raghunath Prasanna and from his uncles Bholanath Prasanna and Vishnu Prasanna. His family moved to Delhi in the early seventies, and he later became the disciple of Hafeez Ahmed Khan and Sarfaraz Hussain Khan. He also took lessons from singer Mahadev Mishra of Banaras Gharana. Prasanna (born 1951), is a British Indian theatre director and playwright from Karnataka. He is one of the pioneers of modern Kannada theatre. He graduated from the National School of Drama (NSD).

One of them is the flute and shehnai player Rajendra Prasanna, whose son Rishab, Rajesh and Ritesh play the bansuri. Raghunath got his musical training from his father Gauri Shanker, a shehnai player, and from Dauji Mishra from Varanasi. He was the first person in the family to introduce the art of flute (tripura bansuri and Krishna bansuri) in the family tradition, known until then for shehnai playing. Raghunath was also known for playing Tripura bansuri and Krishna bansuri. His techniques have been adopted by his younger brother and disciple Bholanath Prasanna and by Ronu Majumdar
