Album · 2007 · 9 Songs. The early music specialists in Peter Phillips’ justly celebrated vocal ensemble recorded Allegri’s Miserere and Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli back in 1980-though several developments in years since argued for a return trip. This time around, a more transparent production sound allows listeners to sink deeper into the polyphony of all the works on this program.

At the heart of this programme are Tallis's Lamentations and Allegri's beautiful Miserere. Join us in the beautiful surroundings of the Queen's Chapel of the Savoy for this programme of music of prayer and contemplation for the imminent Lenten season. Kyrie Eleison from Mass for 4 voices. William Byrd (1543-1623).

Allegri: De Lamentatione Jeremiae Prophetae. Allegri: Miserere Mei, Deus. Allegri: Incipit Lamentatio Jeremiae Prophetae. Palestrina: Cantantibus Organis. Allegri: Gustate & Videte. Their eagerly-awaited next disc features music from late sixteenth-century Rome and ranges from Allegri’s Miserere, surely the best-known and best-loved work of this period, to a rarely-performed or recorded oddity. Seven Roman musicians came together (or were brought together) to write a Mass-setting where they each contributed different sections. The resulting work, the twelve-voice Missa Cantantibus organis, is a tribute both to Cecilia (the patron saint of music) and to Palestrina.
