Trippin’ Live captures Dr John in fine form, and is probably one of the finest representations of his inimitable New Orleans piano playing and distinguished musicianship. Recorded at Ronnie Scott’s in 1996, the intimate feel and Mac’s relaxed good mood, give the recording a late-evening warmth. Backed by a tight band, with a horn section which really brings out the groove of the songs, the Dr plays a strong set-list. In my opinion there’s not a weak song on the album; I've listened to it many times. The performances are lively, but overall it is his piano playing which really makes it a treat, and there are many great solos. Although the swampy Nite-Tripper does not appear, Dr John the eclectic New Orleans musician, singer and stylist is very well represented.

Trippin' Live . Duke Elegant Dr. John's Gumbo Given Mac Rebennack's limitations as a songwriter, this selection of tunes that made Bourbon Street jump in the '50s is an ideal showcase for his studio-expert piano and sly, whining, raceless vocal affectations.

With the exception of a gentle version of "The Nearness of You" and a disconcertingly peppy take on "Silent Night," this album is all instrumental-a joy if you're a fan of solo piano, a bit wearing if you're not. - -Keith Moerer. 3. Memories of Professor Longhair.

Rebennack subsequently undertook a lot of session work around LA (appearing briefly for a "Freak Out!" album session with Frank Zappa) and developed his 'Mardi Gras' persona of "Dr. John Creaux, The Night Tripper" with Battiste's help, assembling the "Gris-Gris" album whilst sessioning for Sonny & Cher
