I've got a long history with Tech Itch's music. his Killabites[2] mix was the reason I fell in love with d'n'b. his early Penetration Records releases were the reason I bought a turntable when I was 14. I've collected a lot of his records between '98 and '03. when it comes to d'n'b, darkcore is what I prefer, and there's no one better at darkcore than Tech Itch. but post-2004 many of Tech Itch's releases had none of the magic, the layered and intricate production work or the darkness of his earlier masterpieces and I pretty much lost interest in d'n'b.I've always returned to Tech Itch's classics when I need a reminder of why I love d'n'b, and finally in the past few years I started to investigate some of his newer productions. mostly they suffered the same problem, amen cut-ups and rollers had become boring-as-hell, by-the-numbers tech step. yuck. but starting with the Seed of Design EP things started to get way better. and the Souls of Impatience EP is the culmination of the promises of the past 3 years.the title track is a properly cinematic 2-stepper with great atmosphere and numerous layers of background work. the drums might not be mind blowing but the samples are on point and that classic Tech Itch vibe is there. the next to tracks though, fucking perfect. Ancient Perception is a gnarly cut-up amen smasher with awesome clear but heavy bass synth lines. and the best part, Different Eyes. this is the kind of track I was hoping Tech Itch would make again for the past 10 years or so. low-slung, distorted as fuck amen loops chopped to hell, gritty fucking bass and on-point samples. that intro put a big fucking smile on my face right away. the digital bonus track, I See You is the least of the four, sounding closest to the newer Tech Itch. not a bad tech-y track, but not super interesting.finally got my copy of the 12" in late December and the pressing sounds very good. crisp and loud. however, due to a retarded choice in mailer, my sleeve got bent the fuck up... but hey, the music still sounds great.

"Soul of Impatience" is an ideal bridge-tune for a set, either going into or coming out of harder, darker styles. But the real barn-burner on this 12" is "Ancient Perception", with intensely chopped amens with that signature TechItch EQ-ing and analogue bass drones. And then my personal favorite off this EP "Different Eyes" that words cannot do justice to. GET.THIS.NOW. Tech Itch is back in full effect after a few quiet years earlier this decade, and not only did he not lose his edge, but he seems to have gone even darker in brutal, raw jungle mayhem.
