No Heroes is Converge´s sixth studio album. The album was released on October 24, 2006, on Epitaph Records. The band describes the meaning behind the album this way: These days, cowards outnumber the heroes, and the begging souls outweigh the calloused hands of the hardest of workers. Both in life and in art, the lack of passion is sickening, and the lust for complacency is poisonous. This album is the artistic antithesis of that sinking world; a thorn in the side of their beast. It’s for those who move mountains one day at a time. It’s for those who truly understand sacrifice
In stark contrast to the moderately ambient opening of their last record, You Fail Me, No Heroes begins with the doomy chords of "Heartache", which lasts for just a few seconds before the onslaught of ridiculously fast riffing and drumming begins. Jacob Bannon screams with the intensity that he is so well known for and does not let up until the album's fifth track, "Weight of the World"
It's pretty amazing to think Converge has been around almost as long as some of you have been alive, especially considering this sixth full-length is packed with some of the most ferocious moments in the Boston quartet's 15-plus year history. These 14 right hooks are buff motherfuckers, rendered in various shades of blacks and blues and reds, but it's the opening tandem that really cooks. Nowadays, instead of overstuffed, that older album sounds a bit thin. It's a comparative backward glance: Guitarist Kurt Ballou did an especially fine job recording No Heroes. Musically, as if panning for gold, the band removed everything extraneous and came up with something richer. Also surprising: No Heroes is the longer record of the two, even with fewer songs. But because the writing's strong, it speeds by. You see what I'm getting at?
