There have been many dubious live offerings by the classic Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen over the years. This is not to say that the tapes weren't licensed in some way - perhaps they put some much needed pocket change in the various ex-members' pockets, which is fine. While the released set has the official distinction of being one of Rolling Stone mag's greatest 100 records of all time, hardcore fans knew it was in some ways a hatchet job because it doesn't flow the way a Commander show usually did.

Lookin' at the World Through a Windshield. Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen. Down to Seeds and Stems Again.

Commander Cody and his lost Planet Airmen were one of the great Roots music groups of the late 1960s and 1970s. They laid the groundwork for what would come to be known as the Americana genre. The Airmen did it all; boogie-woogie, country and western, blues, swing and classic Rock and Roll. The group moved to San Francisco in the summer of 1969 and was almost immediately established as a force to be reckoned with. They regularly played Filmore and the Family Dog as well as many other venues and outdoor shows. Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen shine in this live album from 1976. The double LP contains many of their best known songs including my favourite version of their 1971 hit Hot Rod Lincoln, with the extended spoken introduction. HAving owned the Cd release for many years, getting hold of the LP at last has made me very happy.
