El Chicano is an American brown-eyed soul group from Los Angeles, California, whose style incorporates various modern music genres including rock, funk, soul, blues, jazz, and salsa. The group's name is from Chicano, a term for United States citizens of typically Mexican descent. El Chicano, originally formed by Freddie Sanchez under the name The VIP's arose during a period of increasing Chicano consciousness in America.
El Chicano grew out of the burgeoning Latino music scene from the streets of East Los Angeles. Originally as The VIP’s, founded by Freddie Sanchez, El Chicano was the most successful of the . Latino Rock recording artists. Their 7 album run for MCA Records included classic albums such as Viva Tirado, Celebration, Revolucion and Cinco. Viva Tirado (a tribute to Mexican bullfighter, Jose Ramon Tirado) composed by Maestro Gerald Wilson, was their big crossover smash
