Girma Bèyènè & Akalé Wubé by Francis Falceto. Girma Bèyènè disappeared from the Addis Abeba music scene in 1981. Miraculously, he was invited by the exiled producer Amha Eshèté to tour the US with the Wallias Band and three singers (Mahmoud Ahmed, Gétatchèw Kassa and Wubishet Fisseha). Girma chose to never return back to the military-Stalianian paradise of Ethiopian dictator Menguistou. supported by 17 fans who also own Éthiopiques 30 - Mistakes on Purpose. What a wonderful surprise it was to hear the Cuban song "El Carretero" on an album of Senegalese music! I'm familiar with the song from a modern hiphop-ified version on Putumayo's "Latin Groove" CD but this older, more traditional recording is pretty special in its own right.

Paris' Heavenly Sweetness label is rightly proud of this 30th volume in the Ethiopiques series. It's a cross-generational collaboration between legendary Ethiopian singer and keyboardist Girma Beyene - best known for his jazz work in the late 1960s - and contemporary Parisian band Akala Wube. Given that the latter is dedicated to creating music inspired by Ethiopian music of the '60s and '70s, it's little surprise to find that Mistakes On Purpose is a hugely enjoyable and authentic-sounding set (think funk, soul and jazz with an East African twist)
