Indie legends' first new album in four years- widely tipped to be the group's return to a more guitar-centric sound- is stylistically diverse and colored by distant, queasy prodcution. With this album, I'm struck by the possibility that the Flaming Lips are an idea and a project as much of a band, and records are just one of the organization's many concerns. This doesn't seem like any great tragedy, and I've no question that many tens of thousands more people will get into them this year for the first time and find their lives enriched by what the Flaming Lips have to offer. But for the first time in more than 15 years they've made an album that is difficult to consider great, regardless of how it's approached.
The album is more guitar-driven and features more politically themed lyrics than The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. At War with the Mystics won a 2006 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. The album was nominated for the Best Alternative Album Grammy. Since 1999's The Soft Bulletin, the Flaming Lips have issued an album once every three or four years - roughly once per presidential term, making At War with the Mystics the second album they've made during George W. Bush's presidency. While Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots' themes of seizing the moment and accepting mortality could easily be read as a reaction to 9/11, At War with the Mystics is a more overtly timely album for the mid-to-late 2000s, dealing with the motivation behind the war in Iraq and Bush's presidency. This stretch of songs plays almost like a suite, which ties right in with At War with the Mystics' prog rock leanings " is a spacey, late-night instrumental that could easily be synched to The Wizard of Oz, while "Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung" also taps into Floyd's elaborate, epic power.
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is the tenth studio album by American rock band The Flaming Lips, released on July 15, 2002 by Warner Bros. The album was well-received critically and commercially, helping the band break into the mainstream, and was adapted into a musical in 2012
The Flaming Lips have by now explored so many avenues that anything goes. At various points, you might be reminded of Black Sabbath, Bill Withers, Frank Zappa, Prince and Yes. While Mr Ambulance Driver is wistful, rippling soul, the colossal Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung could be a late addition to Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds. It's fitting that Coyne and musical linchpin Steven Drozd first bonded over a Todd Rundgren song; Rundgren's marriage of sweet pop-soul and lysergic freakery on his 1973 album, A Wizard, A True Star is the closest point of comparison . Goin' On closes the album by weaving its spaghetti-like threads into a gently cathartic ballad about plugging on despite the odds. And if anybody has earned the right to hymn the virtues of perseverance, it's the Flaming Lips.
