Atom Heart Mother is English rock band, Pink Floyd’s fifth album. It features material that is less influenced by psychedelia and instead leans more towards a progressive rock style that is featured in their later albums: The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. It is their second album released under Harvest Records, the first being Ummagumma, and was recorded in Abbey Road Studios between March and August of 1970. This album was the band’s first to obtain the top position on the .
Following Atom Heart Mother are three songs ( If, Summer of ‘68 and Fat Old Sun ) that could serve as the soundtrack to the landscape the cow resides in; they are the most pastoral songs (along with Grantchester Meadows from Ummagumma) that Pink Floyd has recorded at this point. They are all variations on each other and act as condensed versions of Atom Heart Mother. Instead of a combination of classical music and psychedelic rock though, we get acoustic folk music mixed with psychedelic rock.
Three months later, Atom Heart Mother became Pink Floyd’s first N. album. EMI’s powers that be already knew that strange-sounding hairy rock groups sold lots of records. Now, it seemed, they could do so without including their name or the album title on the cover. Just a cow. In a field. But in 2016, Atom Heart Mother is probably better known for the cow than the music. Revisiting the album now is like entering a parallel universe inhabited by epic orchestral suites and songs created from the sounds of boiling kettles and frying bacon. Pink Floyd would make better albums, but it remains the apotheosis of their experimental era – or as guitarist David Gilmour later described it, Our weird shit. It was the most thrown-together thing we’ve ever done. An album that ended with a cow in a field in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, began over a year before in Rome.
Pink Floyd’s first UK number 1 album was released in 1970. This was the band’s first recording with an orchestra, the title track ‘The Atom Heart Mother Suite’ taking up a full side of the original vinyl release. The new Discovery version presents the original studio album, digitally remastered by James Guthrie and reissued with newly designed Digipak and a new 12 page booklet designed by Storm Thorgerson. The ‘Discovery’ collection: 14 Remastered Studio Albums. Since 1967 Pink Floyd have produced one of the most outstanding and enduring catalogues in the history of recorded music.
In it, the narrator of this broken heart song is so disillusioned by the failure of his relationship that in part of the song he's talking about himself in the past tense. The funereal guitar lines mirror its lyrical despair. It's not the type of stuff that gets on mainstream radio, but it deserves its position here. In the '90s, European audiences lapped up Sentenced and their downtrodden take on gothic metal, not necessarily their broken heart songs. In most of the songs we chose for this list, the person singing is reflecting about a love gone wrong. In 'Killing Me Killing You,' the narrator is speaking in the present tense.
