The Royal Conservatoire Antwerp (Dutch: Koninklijk Conservatoire Antwerpen) is a Belgian conservatory of music, dance and drama in Antwerp, Belgium. It was founded in 1898 as the Royal Flemish Conservatoire by Peter Benoit.

Lodewijk Mortelmans (5 February 1868, Antwerp – 24 June 1952, Antwerp) was a Belgian composer and conductor of Flemish ancestry. Sometimes called de Vlaamse Brahms ("the Flemish Brahms"), Mortelmans composed in a number of forms, including piano music and orchestral works, but he was most celebrated in his day for his art songs. Beginning in 1899, he often set the poetry of the priest Guido Gezelle. His opera De Kinderen van Zee (The Children of the Sea) was first produced in 1920 at the Vlaamse Opera.

Jef Van Hoof's First Symphonic Suite and the Flemish Fair section from Jan Blockx's Milenka pantomime are more varied in orchestration and possess, at least in the latter instance, a bit of a rustic flair. Bringing up the end of the program is the work that was the reason I purchased the disc in the first place: Daniel Sternfeld's Song and Dance at the Court of Mary from Burgundy (whew), ballet music drawn from the works of Renaissance composer Tielman Susato.

The theater program was also incorporated into the Royal Flemish Conservatoire. Peter Benoit provided three courses: spoken stage, sung stage and lyrical spoken stage. Maurits Sabbe was a teacher and lecturer in the theater class from 1907 until his death in 1938 and developed the training, especially after 1917. In 1962 nl:Luc Philips breathed new life into the training. From 1980, Dora van der Groen became artistic director of the theater department and thoroughly updated this training. 1924-1933 - Lodewijk Mortelmans. 1933-1941 - Flor Alpaerts. 1942-1944 - Jef Van Hoof. 1944-1952 - Lodewijk De Vocht. 1952-1968 - Flor Peeters. 1968-1980 - Eugène Traey. 1980-1991 - Kamiel Cooremans.
