Charles Gerhardt's Classic Film Scores series was a major revelation at the time of its formal beginning, at RCA in the early '70s - true, none of the music was represented in its entirety, but unlike other, similar efforts to re-record classic film music in something resembling optimum form, at least the orchestrations were close (if not identical) to. the originals, and the technology was state of the art for the early '70s, which was (and is) fine

Charles Gerhardt does an excellent job with Max Steiner's GONE WITH THE WIND SCORE. I loved this RCA Classic Film Score series. I had them all on LP. This version gave the score new depth and fidelity and it just flowed so well. Charles Gerhardt conducting the National Philharmonic Orchestra here sounds simply brilliant and is never glaring or overstated. It is a very heartfelt recording.
Opening Sequence: The Twins, Katie Bell, Ashley, Mammy (From "Gone With the Wind"). Your browser does not support the audio element. Driving Home, Gerald O'Hara, Scarlett, Tara (From "Gone With the Wind"). Dance Montage: Charleston Heel and Toe Polka, Southern Belle Waltz, Can Can (From "Gone With the Wind"). Grazioso, Mammy, Ashley, Ashley and Scarlett, Scarlett, Ashley and Melanie Love Theme (From "Gone With the Wind")
The orchestra was incorporated as the National Philharmonic Orchestra in 1970 and Gerhardt himself conducted it in standard repertory, contemporary works, and film score music. Leopold Stokowski made some of his last recordings with this same orchestra. Gerhardt had received some training in conducting, as well as advice from Jascha Horenstein. The series continued with albums devoted to Max Steiner, Miklós Rózsa, Franz Waxman, Alfred Newman, Dimitri Tiomkin, Bernard Herrmann and John Williams as well as albums devoted to music in the films of Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, and Errol Flynn. A number of additional pieces were recorded but remain in the vaults. BMG reissued the Classic Film Scores on CD encoded in Dolby Surround. In 2010, RCA Sony rereleased six of the original CD releases. In 2011, additional albums were reissued.
Gone with the wind (1939). I believe this score to be his Magnum Opus, his timeless masterpiece that gains him immortality. Steiner infused this epic film with traditional southern Americana idioms and songs whose melodies interplay with a multiplicity of outstanding and memorable themes. The defining Tara Theme is in and of itself, one of the greatest and most recognizable themes in film score history. Steiner’s ability to use the orchestra to emote the primal power of Kong was also masterful. Conmpoer/conductors John Morgan and William Stromberg have reconstructed the entire score with outstanding quality and expert conducting under Stromberg’s baton. Max steiner (great film music composers). 3. 4. 5. Grazioso, Mammy, Ashley, Ashley and Scarlett, Scarlett, Ashley and Melanie Love Theme (From "Gone With The Wind"). 6. Civil War, Fall of the South, Scarlett Walks Among the Wounded (From "Gone With The Wind").
