Though little-known today, Pee Wee King was a bandleader who helped modernize country music by adding electric instruments. Even more enduring, perhaps, is the fact that he helped write "Tennessee Waltz. Biggest Hits/Country Barn Dance is a two-fer from RCA's back catalog, and offers a good snapshot of King's popular style of Western swing. Unlike Bob Wills (at least on these recordings), King seems more than happy to take the middle road by combining a smooth vocalist with standard arrangements.

Wills and the Playboys were dancehall denizens, Pee Wee and company an all-purpose Western show band able to satisfy dancers but playing mainly to sit-down audiences. Radio and TV were their primary outlets along with theaters, auditoriums, fairs and parks, where they offered an amalgam of cowboy tunes, polkas, parlor tunes, boogies, swing, novelties and current pop hits that could please any crowd-even listeners who loathed country music. These bands were ubiquitous both before and after World War II in Midwestern and Eastern cities large and small.

Although Pee Wee King remained leader of a very popular Western swing band well into the 1950s, eventually the Rock n Roll craze spelt the end for his kind of music. At the end of the 1950s, he broke up his band but continued to tour with Redd Stewart in Minnie Pearl's Roadshow, continuing to run the show after she retired in 1964 until 1968. In the 1970s, he devoted himself to business interests which included a booking agency and music publishing (he had been involved in the writing of more than 400 songs). In 1974, he was elected to the Country Music Hall Of Fame

Bonaparte's Retreat (Pee Wee King song). Bonaparte's Retreat" is the name of two related songs. The original was a wordless melody that existed as various fiddle tunes dating back to at least the late 1800s and probably well before that. In 1950, American country music artist Pee Wee King recorded a modified version of the song, with lyrics added, which he also called "Bonaparte's Retreat". This latter song has been covered by many country artists.
