What’s the Frequency Kenneth? is an alternative rock hit by . Released on September 5, 1994, it was the first single from the band’s ninth album Monster and signaled a change in the band’s sound; the mandolins and string sections from the band’s early 90s material were replaced by grungy electric guitar and fuzzed out bass. The subject matter of Kenneth –the media’s futile attempt to grasp Generation X–also anticipated Monster’s thematic preoccupation with identity, celebrity, and communication

What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" is a song by the American alternative rock band . from their 1994 album Monster. It was the first single taken from the album, which was released three weeks later. It peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 9 on the UK Singles Chart, and was the first song to debut at number one on Billboard Modern Rock Tracks.

After this song came out, "What's the frequency, Kenneth" became a catchphrase and was a running joke on The David Letterman Show (for a short time, "Kenneth" also became a term used for a clueless person). Rather had a good sense of humor about it and later appeared on the show, singing this with . backing him. Peter Buck remembered the experience in the liner notes for In Time: The Best of . 1988–2003: "I like Dan Rather. This single was the first piece of music to be released by . that included a lyric sheet. album to include printed lyrics was Up, from 1999. The music video, directed by Peter Care, shows the band performing this song under multicolored flashing lights and is notable for debuting new looks for Michael Stipe, who shaved his head, and Mike Mills, who grew out his hair and decked himself out in a rhinestone suit borrowed from Gram Parsons.

From that album, they released a loud (but still melodic, as pretty much anything with Mike Mills contributing will be) rock song called What’s the Frequency, Kenneth? An. he lyrics simply don’t work. At times, he comes close to following through on that message. It’s a point I’m willing to entertain, but maybe we could get some examples or something? And why is the unusual phrase uttered by Rather’s assailant your Benzedrine ? A phrase spit out by a rather confused person is mistakenly used to stereotype a generation, with some sort of old-school amphetamine randomly tossed in?
