Thoroughly Modern Millie is a musical with music by Jeanine Tesori, lyrics by Dick Scanlan, and a book by Richard Morris and Scanlan. It is based on the 1967 film of the same name, which itself was based on the British musical Chrysanthemum, which opened in London in 1956. Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of a small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love – a thoroughly modern aim in 1922, when women were just entering the workforce.
Producer Bob Thiele organized the "New Happy Times Orchestra" shortly after the release of the movie Thoroughly Modern Millie to pay a "tribute" of sorts to 1920s music. Actually, the arrangers (Glen Osser and Tommy Goodman) did not really understand the idiom, and much of the music on this LP comes across as corny and campy.
Thoroughly Modern Millie is an outstanding Broadway soundtrack. The cast is flawless, led by Sutton Foster, the undisputed queen of Broadway, whose lovely voice defines modern musical theatre. But the great thing about this album is that it highlights all the best sounds of jazz.
