Conductor: Kurt Masur) (2002) by Franz Liszt. This album has an average beat per minute of 114 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 80/142 BPM). Tracklist Symphonic Poems (Gewandhausorchester Leipzig feat. conductor: Kurt Masur). Les Préludes, S. 97. 15'07.

Vivid and viscerally exciting, Kurt Masur's performances with the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester of Franz Liszt's symphonic poems may be considered streamlined modern interpretations: lean and propulsive, with only a nod here and there to sentimentality and lushness. These muscular, finely detailed performances of Tasso, Les Préludes, Orpheus, Mazeppa, and the Mephisto Waltz No. 2 are great improvements over many older, traditional renditions, which wallowed in the Romantic excesses of exaggerated rubato and murky, over-blended orchestration.

Masur’s Les Preludes is good if perhaps a bit nondescript, but the (relatively) short, lyrical Orpheus is very successful – almost a bit surprising given that Masur tends to be stronger on drama than reflection and beauty. Disc 2 opens with two of Liszt’s best and best-known symphonic poems: a hard-driven but very effective Prometheus, followed by what is possibly the best Mazeppa in the catalogue.
