Burton is featured with a octet that also includes Bill Pierce on tenor, altoist Larry Monroe and trumpeter Jeff Stout. The music is generally modern hard bop with some real cookers (such as Cedar Walton's "Firm Roots") alternating with solid ballads. Among the highlights are James Williams's jazz waltz "Soulful Bill," John Scofield's playful "Why 'd You Do It" and Burton's unaccompanied workout on the thoughtful "Crystal Silence. This mostly straightahead set is not all that essential but does adds to the strong musical legacy.

This set (reissued in 1995 on CD) was a change of pace for vibraphonist Gary Burton after so many relatively introspective sets for ECM. Gary Burton (born on 23 January 1943 in Anderson, Indiana) is a jazz vibraphone player, known for developing the innovative technique of playing the instrument with four mallets, rather than the usual two. He studied with Herb Pomeroy at the Berklee College of Music, where he met the composer and arranger Michael Gibbs, with whom he subsequently collaborated frequently. Burton, who released his debut album in 1961 at the age of 18, spent the early.

Gary Burton and Berklee. Burton's quartet, in the mid-1970s, featuring, from left, guitarist Mick Goodrick, bassist Steve Swallow, drummer Ted Siebs, and Burton. Pat Metheny, left, and Burton, after a duo show at the Berklee Performance Center in 2003. He gave so much, especially the opportunity to make my professional writing debut on his first album, while I was still a student, in the illustrious company of Phil Woods, Tommy Flanagan, and Joe Morello.
