The Velvet Underground is the self-titled third studio album by American rock band the Velvet Underground. Released in March 1969, it was their first record with Doug Yule, who was a replacement for John Cale. Recorded in 1968 at TTG Studios in Hollywood, California, the album's sound-consisting largely of ballads and straightforward rock songs-marked a notable shift in style from the band's previous recordings.

The Velvet Underground is the third album released by the eponymous band. For example, Cale wanted to record this album with amplifiers submerged underwater. Reed would have none of that and gave the band an ultimatum – either Cale goes or he destroys the band. The other members didn’t want to fire him, but faced with the choice of continuing without Cale.

Upon first release, the Velvet Underground's self-titled third album must have surprised their fans nearly as much as their first two albums shocked the few mainstream music fans who heard them. After testing the limits of how musically and thematically challenging rock could be on Velvet Underground & Nico and White Light/White Heat, this 1969 release sounded spare, quiet, and contemplative, as if the previous albums documented some manic, speed-fueled party and this was the subdued morning after.
The Velvet Underground formed in 1964 after Reed met the classically trained, Welsh-born violist John Cale, who had been experimenting with minimalist composer La Monte Young. Reed invited Morrison, whom he knew from Syracuse University, to play guitar with them, and they took adopted their band name from the title of author Michael Leigh’s 1963 book about kinky sex culture in the Sixties. For Reed, The Velvet Underground served a larger purpose. Lyrically, he sequenced the songs in a way that told a loose story, like a conversation, about love, sex, infidelity and redemption, which he explained in the 1983 book Up-Tight: The Velvet Underground Story, by Victor Bockris and Gerard Malanga. It wasn’t like two different people telling us that, a lot of people would mention that over the course of a four-day tour, she says. It was just like, ‘Damn, what the hell? Can’t get your records.
The group's third album, 1969's The Velvet Underground, was an even more radical left turn than White Light/White Heat. The volume and violence had nearly vanished; the record featured far more conventional rock arrangements that were sometimes so restrained it seems as though they were making an almost deliberate attempt to avoid waking the neighbors. Nevertheless, they recorded about an album's worth of additional material for the label after the third LP, although it remains unclear whether this was intended for a fourth album or not. Many of the songs, though, were excellent, serving as a bridge between The Velvet Underground and 1970's Loaded; a lot of it was officially released in the 1980s and 1990s.
