Sultans of Swing" is a song by British rock band Dire Straits from their eponymous debut album, which band frontman Mark Knopfler wrote and composed. First released in 1978, its 1979 re-release made it a hit in the United Kingdom and United States. The demo of the song was recorded at Pathway Studios, North London, in July 1977 and quickly acquired a following after it was put on rotation at Radio London.

Sultans of Swing Lyrics. You get a shiver in the dark It's raining in the park But meantime South of the river You stop and you hold everything A band is blowing Dixie Double four time You feel alright When you hear the music ring. Well, now you step inside But you don't see too many faces Coming in out of the rain to hear the Jazz go down Competition in other places Ah, but the horns, they blowin' that sound Way on down south Way on down south, London town. Sultans of Swing by Mark Knopfler appears on the self-titled Dire Straits album – 1978. It’s a story song, told as a second person narrative about the London Jazz experience and is based on Knopfler watching a band perform in a pub in Deptford, who called themselves The Sultans of Swing. What have the artists said about the song?

It just came alive as soon as I played it on that '61 Strat which remained my main guitar for many years and was basically the only thing I played on the first album, and the new chord changes just presented themselves and fell into place. The "Guitar George" and "Harry" who are mentioned in the lyrics are George Young and Harry Vander, guitarists of the band The Easybeats.

Sultans Of Swing (WD2N Deep House Bootleg). Sultans Of Swing (Hugo Villanova Remix). Down To The Waterline.

Down to the waterline is surely another highlight of early Dire Straits. It is one of the oldest Mark Knopfler songs, one of 5 songs included on the demo tape Dire Straits recorded in summer 1977. It is the opener of the first album and was planned (however never released) as a second single, following the band’s first single success Sultans of Swing. It is in the key of Bm and features many guitar licks and stuff that is typical for this key but also a lot of surprises like some unusual chord changes in the middle solo or some chromatic notes.
