Jack Johnson (also known as A Tribute to Jack Johnson on reissues) is a studio album and soundtrack by American jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Miles Davis. It was released on February 24, 1971, by Columbia Records. The album was conceived by Davis for Bill Cayton's documentary of the same name, on the life of boxer Jack Johnson. Its two 25-minute-plus tracks were produced from recordings made on February 18 and April 7, 1970, at 30th Street Studio in New York City

A Tribute to Jack Johnson. Jack Johnson is the purest electric jazz record ever made because of the feeling of spontaneity and freedom it evokes in the listener, for the stellar and inspiring solos by McLaughlin and Davis that blur all edges between the two musics, and for the tireless perfection of the studio assemblage by Miles and producer Macero.

Great records do not necessarily arise out of historical ruptures. Nonetheless, Miles Davis’s A Tribute to Jack Johnson is significant in jazz and rock history if only for having the audacity to disrupt both so radically. It is perhaps Davis’s best album from an early 1970s period when he was tearing down the genre walls erected in audience’s minds. The album was Davis’s second stab at a soundtrack, after Elevator to the Gallows in 1958. Jack Johnson is a documentary about the first African-American boxer to become world heavyweight champion.

The album A Tribute To Jack Johnson is a jazz rock classic released by Miles Davis in February of 1971. An album widely under appreciated, and not promoted properly by Columbia Records during the time of its original release. The original intent for the music was a movie soundtrack for a documentary on the life of early 20th century boxer Jack Johnson.

A Tribute to Jack Johnson. I have to admit I was somewhat disappointed when I got this CD because I remembered "Jack" as being a much better album. Oh well memory can play tricks on you, I last heard it in the mid-eighties. I have to say though on second listen there are better electric Miles albums out there (not to mention the 30 previous years of acoustic music) This album is inferior to "Bitches Brew," "In a Silent Way," "Live Evil", "Get Up With It," or even "On the Corner" (which is basically a series of deep grooves) If you want to hear some really.

In the spring of 1970, Miles Davis was fresh off his trailblazing, artistic watermarks In a Silent Way and Bitches. That meant recording countless takes on a theme, and, with assistance from producer Teo Macero, splicing those takes together into one coherent 40-minute release: 1971's A Tribute to Jack Johnson. But now, this compilation documents the sessions in their virtual entirety (there are a couple of missing takes, but nothing too essential), offering an incredible six hours of largely unheard material. Disc one opens with several takes from a February 1970 session of the misleadingly titled "Willie Nelson" (it is, in fact, a Miles Davis original)- much of which was incorporated into the original LP's largely ambient piece "Yesternow".
