Where You Live is the seventh studio album by Cleveland folk/rock/R&B singer Tracy Chapman. Continuing with the acoustic and southern-tinged production styles she picked up on her sophomore album, she also chooses a new recruit for production, Tchad Blake. Although she isn’t a self proclaimed religious artist, Tracy picks up many new Christian undertones, especially on soulful cuts like Change, and Don’t Dwell. The album is certified gold in the United States and reached n. 3 on the Billboard top 200. It stayed there for two weeks

Tracy Chapman’s seventh album is a master class in understated elegance. It's a dexterous blend of the deeply personal (the gut-wrenching Never Yours ) and the stridently political-all seamlessly woven together and held in place by the Ohio native’s singularly mellow vocal. Her social conscience is on full display here; 3,000 Miles rails fiercely against urban poverty, while the starkly arresting America challenges racial bias and political power, its sparse instrumentation letting Chapman’s impeccable musicianship take center stage. Seventeen years on from her first album, Tracy Chapman is still unique. She is, after all, the one black American performer to have mixed soft-rock balladry with angry lyrics and brought issues of politics and race to the concert hall in such a disarming fashion. Her new album follows the usual format, with her acoustic guitar matched against minimalist backing, strong melodies and sturdy but gloomy songs.

Though she is certainly best known for her hits "Fast Car" and "Give Me One Reason," those two songs stand within her history as suspension bridge supports: visible from afar as beacons of a structure with purpose, whose job is to sustain the action from point A to point B in her slow evolution.
