Dan Weiss began playing the drums at the age of six. He received his bachelor’s degree at Manhattan School of Music with a major in jazz percussion and minor in classical composition. Soon after getting his formal education, he began touring the world and recording with musicians such as David Binney, Lee Konitz, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Miguel Zenon, Kenny Werner and many others. Sixteen: Drummers Suite.

Dan Weiss: Starebaby by Mark Corroto, published on April 6, 2018. This in no way explains Starebaby by drummer Dan Weiss. Sixteen: Drummers Suite (Pi Recordings, 2016) and Fourteen (Pi Recordings, 2014), both larger ensemble recordings, composed and arranged by the drummer were critical successes. He could easily have continued down the same path.

Dan Weiss, ‘Starebaby’. Is Starebaby even a jazz album? In some key ways, no. Overall it’s more a work of composition than improvisation, the latest genre-blurring album-length suite from Dan Weiss, a drummer-composer of nimble technique and formidable imagination. But elite jazzers were probably the only ones that could have pulled off Weiss’ latest creation, a dark, intensely dynamic set inspired equally by doom metal and David Lynch. The skeleton of the music is all Weiss, but the meat on the bones comes from the players’ ear-grabbing textures: the poison-gas guitar of Ben Monder, who also.

Alongside jazz and Indian music, Dan Weiss is equally at home in metal and electronica. The stark contrasts, but also the similarities between these worlds fuel his band Starebaby. On the eponymous album, Weiss and co. have created fascinating works, sometimes dark and complex and sometimes dreamy and cinematic, with for example a track dedicated to Angelo Badalamenti, composer of the Twin Peaks soundtrack

The instrumental quintet Starebaby began performing The Memory of My Memory in ballad mode, easing into a swaying, dreamlike melody. But before long, the tempo started to stutter and swim, and the drummer and bandleader Dan Weiss nudged the group toward a harsh and forbiddingly loud climax. The transition reflected the band’s unusually broad skill set, documented on Mr. Weiss’s new album, also called Starebaby. The project takes its name from a remark that a friend’s 8-year-old son made about Mr. Weiss’s infant daughter.

Starebaby is the upshot of drummer Dan Weiss's long-running dream to bring together some of the most accomplished players on the jazz scene to play music that combines jazz with the power of heavy metal and electronic new music.
