For Between Midnight and Dawn, bassist Tyrone Brown gathered together an impressive string sextet that is generally augmented by a drummer and sometimes a percussionist. His ten originals give the players plenty of space to swing and all except cellist Ron Lipscomb (who is nevertheless pretty prominent in places) have opportunities to solo. Violinist John Blake is the best known of the string players, but the others all prove to be quite skilled at both displaying beautiful tones and improvising. The results should delight any fans of string jazz.
