Philadelphia Classics. At first glance, this nine-track album looks like an unethically slim greatest-hits survey of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's biggest early- to mid-'70s Philly soul classics. Look again, though, because it turns out to be something entirely different. Originally released as a double LP in 1977 and combined onto a single CD (with the addition of the bonus track "Do It Any Way You Wanna" by People's Choice), these are not the familiar original versions, but the extended 12" dance mixes.

The legendary partnership of NYC's Disco godfather Tom Moulton and Philadelphia International Records has long been documented. A truly explosive collaboration that yielded endless classic tracks for dancers and deep listeners alike, Moulton seemed to be totally in tune with the labels output and the direction it should go in. Luckily we've been enjoying the fruits of this labour for the last 30+ years with a lot of these PIR classics becoming ingrained in the psyche of the modern day music fan.

Various Artists: Philadelphia Classics. Philadelphia Classics. Philadelphia Classics allowed PIR to take advantage of the moment by re-issuing dance grooves that they already had in the can and had a proven track record. By describing the remixed tracks as Philly "classics" the label was also reminding folks that they were among the trendsetters in the disco movement. Their upcoming album release just might signify a love match made in heaven.

Philadelphia International Records (PIR) is an American record label based in Philadelphia. It was founded in 1971 by the writer-producer duo, Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, along with their long time collaborator Thom Bell. It was famous for showcasing the Philadelphia soul music genre (also known as Philly soul) that was founded on the gospel, doo-wop, and soul music of the time. This Philly Soul sound later became a prominent and distinct era within R&B itself
