Ralph Towner, Eberhard Weber (bass), Jan Garbarek (sax), and Jon Christensen (drums) sounded wonderful together. They had a unique sound, led by Towner's guitar and piano. It is chamber music played by jazz musicians. All the music was composed by Towner. Three of the 5 tracks would be played by his main group Oregon. The first track on the record, Distant Hills, was one of Oregon's most famous tunes. This group recorded their first album, Solstice, in 1975. Sound and Shadows was recorded in 1977
