The band's first studio recordings in 1963 were "Cadillac" & "Roll Over Beethoven", but were not released until much later. The first Downliners Sect release was a self-financed EP of 400 copies, titled "Nite In Gt. Newport Street" - recorded live in the street's club Studio 51, run by Vi Highland & Pat Mayhew, later to become the Ken Colyer Club. It was here that the band met and took on Ray Sone as harmonica player. Harvey left before the band recorded the album "The Rock Sect's In" and a single "The Cost Of Living", after which Gibson & Sutton quit the band. One notable session musician & arranger in four of their albums was John Paul Jones. In 1967 Craine and Grant formed a new line-up and continued as Don Craine's New Downliners Sect.
The Downliners Sect's debut album in all of its primitive glory and state of the art sound; all augmented with the presence of a brace of bonus tracks from the complete Nite at Great Newport Street live EP. If you thought the original Sect was raw, these tracks, cut before the band had a recording contract, capture their music-making in an even more rudimentary (and equally alluring) state of development, as a club band trying to make some noise to impress people. More than 30 years after its release, the album still sparks with energy and affection for the music.
The Downliners Sect are an English R&B and blues-based rock band, formed in the 1960s beat boom era. Stylistically, they were similar to blues-based bands, such as The Yardbirds, The Pretty Things and the Rolling Stones, playing basic R&B on their first album The Sect. Critic Richie Unterberger wrote: "The Sect didn't as much interpret the sound of Chess Records as attack it, with a finesse that made the Pretty Things seem positively suave in comparison.
