Arturo Toscanini always loved these three symphonic poems by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, since he gave either the . or world premiere of all of them. They seem to be made just for his baton to make them come alive. And no one has ever done them better than here. In 1952, my high school orchestra director's son was playing flute in the NBC Symphony Orchestra, under Toscanini. He played this recording for a group of us, and I fell in love with the Pines of Rome. Since then I've completely worn out 3 vinyls.

Pines of Rome (Italian title: Pini di Roma) is a four-movement symphonic poem for orchestra completed in 1924 by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi. The piece, which depicts pine trees in four locations in Rome at different times of the day, is the second of Respighi's trilogy of tone poems based on the city, along with Fountains of Rome (1917) and Roman Festivals (1928).

Of all Respighi's vibrantly orchestrated works, the so-called Roman Trilogy - and in particular the Pines of Rome - is by far the best known and most frequently performed. Respighi was a keen observer of nature and his surroundings and translated these observations into highly evocative, descriptive tone poems. Apart from an occasional choice of tempo is an enjoyably solid, straightforward performance.
